bike riding in Los AngelesGet Out of Your Cars and Ride! Biking can be a fun and healthy opportunity for fitness and transportation. This is true whether it is biking to work or visiting a friend.  But the benefits stretch beyond health – biking can help reduce traffic congestion, enhance your quality of life and save you money.

While the car has been king for a long time in Los Angeles, biking is getting easier, safer and more convenient, thanks to the recently passed Los Angeles Bicycle Plan and the County of Los Angeles Bicycle Master Plan, which will add nearly 700 miles of new bikeways throughout the county.

In the beach cities and beyond, the South Bay Bicycle Master Plan will help connect seven cities in the region, while Long Beach is transforming neighborhoods into Bike-Friendly Business Districts to encourage business owners and customers to choose bikes, not cars, for short trips.

Events like CicLAvia and the Los Angeles River Ride are helping more Angelenos take to the streets on bikes.

So find a bike event or ride, grab your helmet and hit the streets!

Support Local Businesses in Bike Friendly Business Districts

bike friendly business districtThe nation’s first Bike-Friendly Business Districts were launched June 1 in Long Beach to encourage merchants and customers to benefit from choosing bikes, not cars, for short trips. The Bike-Friendly Business Districts operate under the premise that businesses are looking for ways to reach and retain customers, and customers are looking for ways to shop, dine, and run errands as conveniently and pleasurably as possible.

Bike-Friendly Business Districts encourage merchants to use bicycles for their deliveries and errands, and encourage residents to ride their bikes to shop and dine locally. They promote personal health for residents, and financial health for businesses as they attract more customers, and more sales.

Bike-Friendly Business Districts will include merchant bicycles, other equipment and promotional events in Bixby Knolls, 4th Street/”Retro Row,” East Village Arts District and Cambodia Town. Participating merchants in the Bike-Friendly Business Districts offer weekly “Bike Saturday” discounts and incentives for patrons who bike to shop or dine at their businesses.  For more information, visit
